AYA White Clay Smoke-fired Ceramic Vase
Handmade ceramic vase created by South African ceramic artist F. Nthunya.
Smoke-fired in the kiln, hand burnished and hand decorated. One of a kind.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
F. Nthunya was born in Eastern Cape, South Africa and later moved to Kwazulu-Natal, where he fell in love with traditional Zulu pottery techniques.
Nthunya’s ceramics are hand built from fine white clay using a coiling technique. Each piece is hand polished/burnished. The pieces are then fired in the kiln and smoke fired in a pit, adding aloe leaves to create his unique elegant smoke swirls on the white porcelain-like vessels.
He employs the same techniques used by ancient Africans, and takes inspiration from traditional work from Nigeria, South Africa, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Nthunya has won several awards in SA for his unique ceramic works, and his pieces are in the permanent collections of museums in Cape Town and Pretoria.
